Most AI logo generators produce a picture of a logo — a flat grid of pixels — not the vector artwork a printer or sign maker needs. On top of that, generated marks frequently contain small visual errors: letterforms that are not quite consistent, curves that do not meet, spacing that drifts, detail that dissolves on close inspection.
That combination means the file usually has to be redrawn and corrected, rather than simply converted. An automatic tracer will faithfully reproduce the mistakes.
Why this is different from a low-resolution photograph
When someone sends a printer an old JPG of a professionally designed logo, the shapes underneath are correct — they are just recorded badly. Redrawing is a matter of recovering something that was right to begin with.
A generated logo is different. The image may be perfectly sharp, and the underlying design may still contain errors, because the tool produced something that looks convincing at a glance rather than something constructed to be correct. Enlarging it does not reveal detail; it reveals the problems.
What to look for in your own logo
- Lettering that is nearly right. Two instances of the same letter that are subtly different shapes. A letter with an odd weight or a strange join. Type that does not match any real typeface, because it was drawn rather than set.
- Curves that do not close or meet cleanly, particularly where two shapes are supposed to be continuous.
- Spacing that drifts — gaps between letters that are visibly uneven once you look for it.
- Detail that dissolves. Fine elements that read as texture at small size and as mush when enlarged.
- Colours that will not reproduce. Soft gradients, glows and shadows that look fine on a screen and are expensive or impossible in vinyl, embroidery or single-colour print.
None of these are visible in the thumbnail you approved. All of them are visible at a metre wide.

Why running it through an AI vectoriser rarely helps
Automatic vectorising tools convert a picture into shapes by following its edges. They cannot tell the difference between an edge you intended and an edge produced by compression, anti-aliasing or a generation error. The result is typically hundreds of unnecessary points, subtly wavy outlines, and lettering turned into approximate blobs rather than clean type.
At thumbnail size this is invisible. At sign size it is the difference between looking established and looking homemade — which is the entire reason you are spending money on signage.
The ownership question worth asking early
Rules on whether AI-generated images can be owned or registered as trade marks vary by country and are still developing, and they matter more the more you invest in the mark. Before a logo goes onto vehicles, premises and workwear, it is worth knowing where you stand. Check the terms of the specific tool you used, and take proper advice if the identity is going to carry real commercial weight — we are not lawyers and will not pretend to be.
What to do instead
If the generated mark contains a genuinely good idea — and often it does — the sensible route is to keep the idea and rebuild it properly: drawn by hand as true vector artwork, with the letterforms resolved, the spacing corrected, the colour developed to work in print as well as on screen, and the full set of versions a real business gets asked for.
If the idea is not worth keeping, that is worth knowing too, and it is cheaper to find out before the van is booked in than after.

Can you work from an AI-generated logo?
Yes, provided you have the right to use it. We will say plainly if we think the underlying idea is not worth keeping, rather than charging to rebuild something that will not serve you.
My AI logo came as an SVG. Is that not vector already?
Not necessarily. Some tools wrap a bitmap image inside an SVG, and some auto-trace their own output, which produces technically-vector artwork carrying all the original errors. The checker will tell you which you have.
Will the rebuilt version look the same?
It will look like the same idea, executed properly. In practice people describe the result as the logo they thought they had.
Is using AI for a logo a mistake?
It is a reasonable way to explore ideas quickly and to find out what you like. It becomes a problem when the output is treated as finished artwork, because that is the one thing it is not.
